The use of Letrozole is for the treatment of the hormonally responsive breast cancer after surgery. It is a drug that has a trade name of Femara and is an oral non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. The aromatase enzymes cause the androgens to convert into estrogens. Once produce, these estrogens will then group the estrogen inhibitors thus causes the cells to divide. Letrozole is a product that does not lessen the mineral or corticosteroids production. Tamoxifin is also other product that is used as a treatment for the breast cancer that is hormonally responsive. However, note that this medicine does not get in the way of the estrogen receptor. The use of Letrozole is effective only when estrogen is produced by certain tissues like those on the breasts and certain sites of the brain. That is why it is only effective for women who are in their post-menopausal stage. Women who are in their pre-menopausal stage, the estrogen in their body are being produced by their ovaries and not by any peripheral tissues thus making letrozole not that effective. According to the BIG 1-98 study on post-menopausal women, the use of letrozole causes a reduction in the recurrence of the cancer. However, it is not able to change the survival rate of these women unlike tamoxifen.
The anti-estrogen action of Letrozole is preferred by athletes and bodybuilders for use during an anabolic steroid cycle to reduce excess water retention and prevent the formation of gynocomastia related breast tissue that is a side effect of some anabolic steroids. Some studies have shown that Letrozole can be used to promote spermatogenesis in male patients suffering from nonobstructiveazoospermia. When used with growth hormone, Letrozole has been shown therapeutic for adolescents and children with short stature. Letrozole has also been used to treat endometriosis.
